| My mom received an email today from a Christian who was incensed that a new Senator, who happens to be a Muslim, has asked to take his oath on the Koran instead of the Bible at his swearing in. The writer of this email claimed that this man's desire to swear on the Koran was a threat to American ideals and to Christians across our nations.
May I remind you all that America was founded on the freedom of religion? This does not mean Americans are free to be Baptists, Episcopalians or Catholics, and nothing else. It means they are free to be Hindus, Buddhists, Wiccans, or Muslims. To say that this Senator's desire is a threat to American ideals is preposterous. To keep this man from practicing the religion of his choice is the sole threat to American ideals.
Although I disagree with Islam and believe Jesus is the only way to paradise, I believe the Senator should be allowed to swear on the book of his choosing. Why swear on a book that means nothing to you? As he is not a Christian, I'm sure swearing on a Bible is no different to him than swearing on an encyclopedia. Why should he be kept from swearing on the book that he believes to be holy? If I were a Christian elected to office in a Muslim nation (I know, but use your imagination) I would ask to swear on a Bible, because the Koran means nothing to me.
The fact that a Muslim may be elected to our senate, regardless of his practices and beliefs, is a testament of the greatness of America. How many other nations in the history of the world have permitted such religious tolerance? Precious few. Allow this Senator to practice his faith, and practice yours, in peace.
And to anyone who claims to be worried about the Senator's soul, remember that honey works better than vinegar, and love touches deeper than anger.

| if anyone still reads this, please
be in special prayer for Andy Barrick, Liberty University’s Director of
Alumni Affairs and his entire family who was hit by a drunk driver
while driving home from church Sunday evening in Bedford County, VA.
Last
night Andy, his wife, Linda and two children, Jen, 15, and Josh, 11,
were involved in a head-on collision with a DUI driver who was
attempting to escape police and speeding at an estimated 70 m.p.h. The entire family was airlifted to three hospitals in Charlottesville, Lynchburg and Roanoke for multiple injuries. Please be in particular prayer for 15-year-old Jen, who is at the University of Virginia medical center with severe head trauma.
Andy is married to the former Linda Hindson, daughter of Liberty's Dr. Ed Hindson. The
family had just come from the Thomas Road Baptist Church Sunday evening
service, where Dr. Hindson had given the message and where Jen had sung
as a member of the Liberty Christian Academy choir. I had the priveledge to work with Andy when I was interning at University Relations, and would appreciate it if ya'll would pray for him and his family with me.

| does anyone realize how utterly ridiculous it is to get a 4 year degree in something other than nursing, therapy, or education and then return to wartown?

| There is one redeeming thing about the sporting world in June. Especcially when the Braves are slumping.
Not the Stanley Cup, although I loved watching the Canes win and Cam
Ward is now 2nd on the Never-Gonna-Happen Crush List, only behind Jeff
Francoeur.
DEFINATELY NOT the NBA playoffs. What a waste.
It's World Cup Soccer. And yes, there are people out there who care.
The soccer schedule has determined my lunch break and the lunchbreaks
of the majority of my co-workers this month. Everyone is fighting over
the treadmill closest to the TV playing FIFA action at the gym. Pizza
Depot is silent as people stare at the TV. So understand why I'm sick
of latenight hosts and people I know saying "soccer sucks" and "no one
cares."
Ok, the U.S. team put up a very disappointing show. However, this is
the one true world tournament where brilliant athletes get to showcase
their talents (World Series, please. Canada doesnt count. And don't
get me started on the Olympics. How many Afghanis figure skate) If
anyone considers himself a fan of athleticism, he'll wake up and pay
attention. I was disappointed when I went to lunch and found France
playing some country called Togo (I think it's in Africa, but it may be
an island) but after watching the Togo-ian (?) goalie block 7 shots,
mostly from world-class athlete Henry, I found myself cheering for the
little nation and was almost late back to work. Too bad they lost.
These games are the most intense you'll ever see, and if people don't
care, it's only b/c they haven't bothered to watch 5 minutes of a game.
True, Americans may not get all painted up and start riots in the
streets, but plenty of people care. And if any naysayers have actually
watched a game and still don't care, shut the heck up. I don't like the
NFL, but that doesnt mean I have to shout it in the streets.
